Spring/Summer Season Moving to the Fall
Deadline Extended to August 15th
We would like to personally thank you for registering for the
Spring/Summer 2010 Season of Backyard Flag Football.
We would like to apologize to all that have registered to date that our
season will not be starting as planned on Sunday, June 27th. Two weeks ago we completed our 20th season of flag football. To
date, we have always prided ourselves on our punctual start date as well as our end of season date, including the playoffs and championship
games. Over the last three weeks, some situations occurred that will prevent us from starting Sunday, June 27th.
Things
Taking Place:
¶ Coach Rich, who if you have been a participant in prior seasons know, sets up the field,
distributes player of the week medals and assists in teaching players the fundamentals of Backyard Flag Football recently had a tumor
removed from his collar bone and had major shoulder and bicep surgery due to an automobile accident.
¶ In addition to Coach Rich’s unforeseen surgery, we have received notice that the field at Ross Community Park is in the process of
being aerating, adding top soil and reseeding the playing surface.
¶ We have had a large amount of parents
express concern about playing games in August due to planned vacations, etc. To accommodate the planned vacations, we would
be forced to alter the number of players per team.
¶ We would like for everyone involved to get their money’s
worth during the season and if we were forced into playing double headers and someone had to miss one or two Sundays, they would miss
2-4 of the 8 scheduled games.
With the factors listed above, it has been decided it would be in the best interest of the organization,
Ross Township Recreation Department and the players who have registered to participate in the Spring/Summer session of flag football
that instead of playing double headers in excessive heat and high humidity for 2 ½ hours on any Sundays in July and August, to err
on the side of caution and push the Spring/Summer session into our Fall Season which will begin Sunday, September 12th.
We
are expecting a large turnout for our Fall Season of Backyard Flag Football. As an organization we truly appreciate the opportunity
of getting to know your son/daughter in the Fall Season. Once again, please accept our sincere apology for the delay of the
start of the Spring/Summer season.
Upcoming Events Leading up to the Regular Season:
¶ Draft for
all ages (parents and players need not be present at draft) will take place the last week of August 2010.
¶ Following the draft you will receive a call from your son/daughter’s coach
¶ At the discretion of the individual
coaches, practices will be scheduled beginning as early as August 28th and all parents/players will be advised
¶ All team jerseys will be distributed on Saturday, September 11, 2010 by your son/daughter’s coach
¶ If your
son/daughters age will be changing in the next two months, the age they reached by June 2010 is the age group they will be placed
in, unless specifically noted on your registration form.
Equipment Needed:
¶ All players must have a mouth
guard
¶ Some form of spikes are recommended, i.e., baseball, football, soccer, etc.
¶ Any type of comfortable shorts/pants are acceptable
¶ Team Jerseys and Belts are provided by the league
We
are extremely excited about the upcoming season and seeing many return faces and meeting all the new participants. If you
have any questions regarding the new start date, please send me an e-mail at ladigregory@comcast.net or lisa.digregory@aon.com, backyardfootball@comcast.net or
you may call the Backyard Sports Hotline at 412-318-4557 and Sandra will be happy to assist you.
Thank you for your support of

Backyard Flag
Football’s Objective
Backyard Flag Football provides a structured, organized, non-contact league that focuses on the basic fundamentals
of flag football. Some of the goals of Backyard Flag Football are to teach and emphasize the importance of sportsmanship, discipline,
respect and life skills that can be used later in life. From our perspective as a family-owned and operated organization, we
make every attempt to monitor each and every player to be as fair as possible regarding playing time, learn the rules of Backyard
Flag Football, develop flag football skills and build social skills.
Factors to Remember:
As an organization,
each season our goal is to give each player a better understanding of the rules, teach them how to play flag football and improve
their running, throwing, catching and flag pulling skills. Most importantly, we want to help build social skills that can be
used later in life. Remember, we have approximately 2 ½ hours per week (including practice and game times) to develop player skills. As much as we would like to see each and every player get the same amount of playing time in a game setting, there are many factors
to take into consideration:
ð Keep in mind that if a player is in his/her 1st season, understand that
learning the rules and fundamentals of Backyard Flag Football takes time and that all players learn and grasp the concept of the game
at different levels.
ð Experienced players who have participated in past seasons are granted additional playing
time to assist new and younger players. With that thought in mind, these players not only become role models but also assist
coaches by being on the field of play and are able to teach and share their experiences with newer players.
ð Our ultimate goal is to see each and every player progress and develop game after game.
ð Younger players in
each age group not only have to learn the rules, how to play the game of Backyard Flag Football, but also must adapt to playing with
older participants in their respective age groups. Having said that, we do not want to overburden a younger player and make
the playing field a stressful environment when in fact it should be a time to have fun.
ð Talent Levels – Not
every player can play quarterback, catch a football, take a handoff and run the football. That does not mean that a player will
never be able to do that in Backyard Flag Football. Remember that pulling a player’s flag on defense is as important if not
more important than throwing or catching a football, running with the ball or scoring a touchdown. Don’t ever underestimate
the importance of the little things like pulling a flag. This could be the starting point of bigger and better things to come.
FACT: Every minute spent teaching a player a specific sport goes a long way in the development process

¶ Backyard Sports does not keep weekly individual player stats for the sole reason that this creates individualism. We promote
the “team concept” in lieu of individualism. Other organizations may consider that a positive asset while we consider it a promotion
of self-gratification. The end result being that 1 or 2 players are the entire team rather than giving each and every player
on the team an opportunity to play and learn the game.
¶ The Backyard Sports website is fully
active, updated daily and is extremely user friendly to all who visit to gather information about Backyard Sports.
¶ Backyard Sports is currently in the midst of our 11th season of Flag Football and our 5th year in operation. Over 3,500 players
have participated since the inception of Backyard Flag Football. We are proud to lay claim as “Pittsburgh’s #1 Youth Coed Flag
Football League”!
